Key innovations
This project innovatively develops high-solid, low-viscosity, small-particle-size water-borne epoxy emulsions and curing agents. Through molecular design and continuous emulsification technology, it breaks foreign monopolies, realizes water-borne container coating, significantly reduces VOCs, and reaches the international advanced level.
Potential economic benefits
This green technology product successfully replaces traditional solvent-based coatings through water-based epoxy coatings, complies with strict VOCs emission controls, and accounts for 95% of China's global container market. It has broken the monopoly of foreign technology and achieved large-scale application, with sales reaching 1.
Potential climate benefits
This project's water-borne epoxy resin and curing agent directly and significantly reduce VOCs emissions generated by traditional solvent-based coatings. The generation and management process of VOCs often involves energy consumption and carbon emissions, and water-based treatment effectively reduces the carbon footprint of this link.

Solution details

The technology of this project belongs to the field of new materials. With the advancement of China's Belt and Road Initiative, international trade has driven the development of the global container shipping industry. Due to environmental corrosion and external wear, containers have a certain life and need to be replenished by new containers. According to statistics, in the past ten years, an average of about 3 million TEU (TEUs) have been added every year, and more than 95% of the world's containers are produced in China, bringing huge business opportunities to container coatings. Due to the characteristics of container transportation, the internal and external coatings of containers must have excellent adhesion, moisture resistance and corrosion resistance. Before 2017, solvent-based supporting coatings will be basically used. The release of a large amount of solvents will bring serious environmental pollution, and various industries will control VOC emissions. Increasingly strict. Since container painting is completed in the factory, it is feasible to fully realize water-based applications. In 2015, the container industry responded to the call of the country and formulated the "China Container Industry Association VOCs Governance Self-Regulation Convention." In the second half of 2017, water-based coating of standard containers was fully realized. According to statistics, in 2018, about 200,000 tons of water-based container coatings were used nationwide, directly reducing VOC emissions by more than 80,000 tons.  Water-based coatings reduce VOC emissions, but coating workability and coating performance must meet relevant technical standards. Many years ago, some companies in the industry tried a matching plan for water-based PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) primer and acrylic topcoat, but due to problems in the use of containers, large-scale production was not formed. With the advancement of water-borne epoxy emulsion technology, it has become possible to use water-borne epoxy zinc-rich primer + water-borne epoxy topcoat for the inner wall, and water-borne epoxy zinc-rich primer + water-borne epoxy intermediate paint + water-borne acrylic topcoat for the outer wall. Container coatings require a small particle size of epoxy emulsion to ensure high density and excellent anti-corrosion properties of the coating; at the same time, high solid content and low viscosity are required to facilitate paint making and reduce apparent defects. Synthesizing epoxy emulsions with small particle size, high solid content and low viscosity is a technical difficulty and a technical bottleneck that restricts the development of domestic emulsions. In the early stage of development, several major box paint factories basically used imported epoxy emulsions. In order to break the monopoly of foreign technology and obtain core technologies, this project has developed relevant water-borne epoxy resins and curing agents, which have solved the above technical difficulties. The coating performance is equivalent to that of similar foreign products, and has been applied on a large scale.  This project uses single-terminated amino-polyether to chemically modify epoxy resin, and uses molecular design to prepare internal emulsified water-borne epoxy resin suitable for zinc-rich primers. Macromolecular polyether was used to modify epoxy resin to prepare a reactive emulsifier with an HLB value of 14-18. A continuous emulsification process was used to externally emulsify the mixed epoxy resin to prepare a water-borne epoxy emulsion with a D90 of less than 1 mu;m, a solid content of about 57%, and a viscosity of 4500Pa middot;s, which is suitable for internal topcoats and intermediate paints; single-terminal amino polyether was used to hydrophilic modify the epoxy resin, and then aliphatic amine and polyamide were used to add the addition reaction to prepare the amine curing agent, which has good toughness and fast curing, and can be used with water-borne epoxy emulsion. The coating using the above resins has high density, good adhesion and strong corrosion resistance, and can meet the use requirements of container coatings. According to the search of the Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology Information, this technology has generally reached the international advanced level and is highly competitive in China.  The "2019 Shanghai City Support Guide for the First Batch of Sub-new Materials" lists water-borne epoxy emulsions with high solid content in the catalog. The products studied in this project have been used on a large scale by well-known container coating companies such as Kansai (China) Coatings, Jiangsu Dewei and Chenyang Water Paint. In the past three years, it has sold 6070 tons, with new sales of 101.57 million yuan. This project has applied for 5 China invention patents (4 authorized) and published 3 papers.
