Key innovations
China is the first systematic in vitro toxicology alternative testing platform, pioneered the safety assessment of cosmetic nanomaterials, and established rapid testing methods and standards for environmental endocrine disruptors, illegal food additions and residues, reaching international advanced.
Potential economic benefits
By providing in vitro toxicology testing and rapid food safety testing technology, the project has generated testing fees of more than 5 million yuan and brought about 8 million yuan in profits to related testing companies.
Potential climate benefits
By reducing the consumption of animal breeding resources, avoiding environmental pollution and food waste, it indirectly reduces carbon emissions in production, transportation and waste disposal.

Solution details

This project belongs to the field of biology and medicine technology. With the rise of the international animal protection and animal welfare movement and the proposal of the "3R" principle, toxicology in vitro substitution technology has become one of the important technical trade barriers. Endocrine disruptors pollution in the food environment is a well-known public health problem that can cause health effects such as reproductive malformations and infertility. Illegal food additions and residues are the most common problems in food safety, and it is necessary to establish relevant testing technologies. This project has established a systematic in vitro alternative toxicology testing and verification platform; pioneered systematic research on the safety of nanomaterials in cosmetics through this platform; established a variety of environmental endocrine disruptors detection technical methods; and established a variety of non-edible and easily abused colorants and pesticide residues.
The main technical innovation contents of the project: (1) For the first time in China, a new in vitro toxicology alternative test technology platform that is synchronized with the world has been systematically established and introduced, and a number of alternative toxicology technologies such as local toxicity, genotoxicity, and reproductive and developmental toxicity have been established;(2) This project has established alternative test verification and laboratory quality control specifications, realizing the overall international integration of alternative test testing, verification, and quality control;(3) Through the toxicological alternative technology platform, the safety assessment of commonly used cosmetic nanomaterials was conducted, and a new model for the safety testing of commonly used nanoparticles in cosmetics was explored;(4) Establish a rapid new detection method and risk assessment model for exogenous pollution endocrine disruptors in food. Using multiple sensitive cells such as MCF, model organisms Drosophila as models, and androgen receptor-transfected cells, environmental androgens and estrogen have been established. The detection technical system for hormones pollutants provides an overall assessment strategy for environmental hormone residue issues;(5) The established method system and standards for the rapid detection and confirmation of various non-edible and easily abused substances, agricultural and veterinary drug residues in food have filled the gaps in relevant testing technical standards in my country's food safety system.
Technological innovation points: (1) For the first time in China, a new toxicology testing platform covering in vitro substitution technology systems, verification applications, quality control specifications, etc. has been established;(2) This project has established more than 20 technical testing methods with multiple toxicological endpoints including food toxicology in vitro testing methods. Testing methods to achieve comprehensive safety evaluation of in vitro cosmetic substitution;(3) Using the in vitro substitution technology platform to conduct groundbreaking research on the safety issues of nanocosmetics that are of concern at home and abroad for the first time;(4) Establish a combined technical method for the detection and risk assessment of environmental endocrine disruptors;(5) This project establishes a method system and standard method for the rapid detection and confirmation of non-edible and easily abused additives, agricultural and veterinary drug residues in food;(6) Based on this project, a total of 2 patents were authorized, 2 patents were applied, 5 national standards and 11 industry standards were established, and 22 relevant academic papers were published, including 5 SCI papers, 17 Chinese core journal papers, 7 international academic conference papers, 1 domestic conference paper, and 2 academic monographs were published. After novelty search, the overall technical level of this project has reached international advanced.
Application and promotion status: (1) This project has been promoted in quality inspection, disease control and related companies. The in vitro substitution methods involved have been used since 2006. So far, about US$10 million worth of goods have been tested, resulting in testing fees of more than 5 million yuan. The food coloring and residue testing methods provided by the project have won relevant testing companies. About 8 million yuan in profits. (2) At the Shanghai Port, 21 alternative methods in different fields have been recognized by CNAS, of which 15 have been recognized for this project, which is of great significance for effectively responding to EU national cosmetics regulations and technical trade measures. (3) During the official working meeting between the EU and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the alternative standard system established in this project provided important technical support to cope with international pressure, saving nearly 5 million yuan in costs for related food and cosmetics companies.
